Umoja Ghent is an African student association that wants to represent and carry out the African diversity in Ghent. Umoja derives from Swahili and literally means ‘unity’. To create unity amongst all the students it is important that every student can identify with a student association. We are thus the voice of an important, though underrepresented group of students.
Umoja wants to contribute to this by offering a platform promoting the diversity of African cultures. Furthermore, contemporary societal topics - like social inequality, decolonisation and emancipation - won’t remain undiscussed. The intention is to make sure that the societal reality by which every student with an African migration background is confronted, is something there can be talked about. Likewise, we strive for intercultural togetherness amongst all the Ghent-based students.
